MessageA bit about Gordon
Award winning, self-taught, Canadian visual artist Gordon Leverton's love of the urban environment has informed his artistic practice, placing landscape and architectural design at the forefront. In recognition of his work, he received the 2024 City of Hamilton Arts Creator Award and the 2023 City of Hamilton Arts and Heritage Award for his significant role in educating people on Canadian heritage. He was elected into the Society of Canadian Artists (SCA) and Ontario Society of Arts (OSA) in 2023 and 2024 respectively.
His portrayal of cities architectural elements rendered with flattened perspective, bright colors, and strong play of light and shadow has become his recognizable style. Inspired by the hidden networks of alleyways and streets, he transforms buildings, shadows, urban elements, and skylines into dynamic compositions that explore the connections between architecture and community. Leverton is currently exploring ways in harmonizing his urban subject matter through abstraction and bringing focus to physical spaces that are often overlooked or ignored as traditional subjects of landscape.
In early 2025, Leverton completed his first international art residency in Guadalajara, Mexico exploring the vast urban architectural landscapes. Inspired by the vibrant colours of Mexico, a new series emerged called “shadow. text. colour.” that exhibited at #Hashtag Gallery, Mexico City in May 2025 and now available on his website.
His recognizable aesthetic and widespread presence resonate with audiences and collectors, forging strong connections through his art and collected in public and private collections throughout Canada, US, Mexico and internationally.
