Major-General T. Chute marched on the Maori Pa of Okotuku, South Taranaki high country, on Janury 3rd and burned the village. On the following day, two companies of the 14th Regiment and a force of Maori Contingent advanced on the village and were met with heavy musket fire from within. It has been suggested by Peter Hughes in " A Catalogue of the works of Gustavus Ferdinand Von Tempsky" that this painting may depict the attack on Okotuku. If so, it may be the work given by von Tempsky to Featherston: "I have just in time finished a battle picture of Okotuku which I send this mail to Featherston" Letter to Emilia von Tempsky 7/4/1868.
