George Cannon
Albuquerque, NM
I have worked as an artist and photographer for over 50 years. My work ranges through all forms of photograhy and digital art.
MessageI grew up in Georgia but moved to the Northeast in 1974. I am a self-taught artist. I began photography at 20 years old while studying architecture. After moving to Lexington, Massachsetts, in 1976, I worked as a nature and landscape photographer for books and magazines. I co-published my first book in 1979 and moved back to upstate New York. I later owned and operated Lumiere Glasswork Studio for twelve years, creating stained and leaded glass windows and lamps, many of which were created from my photographs. I have published over twenty books of work in the last two decades and currently publish two art magazines dedicated to fine art studio nudes (MUSE by Imageguy Artbooks), and unusual and odd photographs ( ...strange by Roadsidepress.com.). I retired from the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University after 16 years there and currently work as an artist and publisher recently relocating to Albuquerque, New Mexico. In my spare time I play guitar.
Statement
My work is constantly evolving, as it should be, influenced by all things that life brings. Much of my imagery over the years has focused on our mark as humans on the planet. Our environments, our amusements, our cultures, and our decay. As a result, urban landscape and street photography influenced much of my work, in contrast to my years shooting nature and landscape. My commercial work has brought me back around to people in particular, shooting portraiture, head shots, weddings, fashion, stage and theater productions, and fine art nudes. With digital technology has come the ability to take images and expand them in new and expressive ways. My work throughout my career has been about design. My most recent book, Visual Conversations (Imageguy Art Books / Blurb) explores the creation of a narrative in the viewer's mind deriving from the structure of an image and its relationship to the viewer's own experience. What shapes our reaction to a picture or art work? My work is intended to bring about a reaction, a conversation. Art needs to be lived with and experienced. And it can often connect with us and connect us to something of deeper meaning we had not expected. My motto is, "Say, I see."
