Protesters hung a torn flag reading "Together as One," capturing the brutal irony behind the myth of U.S. support for Puerto Rico—its damaged state reflecting the reality of colonial neglect and subjugation. While the U.S. claims unity, Puerto Ricans have faced systemic oppression. Eugenics program, second-class citizenship, a legal classification as a “savage tribe" full of "alien races” that are unfit for self-rule, amongst other things.
