Message-
Artist: Rowan Eriksson
Rowan Eriksson is a contemporary painter, and an active member of Seattleās LGBTQIA+ community. Based on the unceded lands of Coast Salish land, specifically the ancestral land of the Duwamish, Suquamish, Stillaguamish, and Muckleshoot People. They received their BFA in painting from the University of Florida and graduated from the year long program at the Sequential Artists Workshop.
Focusing on the body and how it is perceived, Rowan examines the influence of social media as a potent tool for disseminating ideas and shaping public perceptions. Their creative path has led them from pursuing comics as a medium for narrative expression to their current focus on collage painting, weaving together diverse influences and storytelling to create works. Rowan's personal narrative is intertwined with their upbringing in a commune and their auditory disability. Born with an auditory disorder, Rowan struggled to speak and be understood. This struggle became their motivation to create art, as a form of communication. To this day art is a means of connecting to the world and their community.
Since coming to Seattle, Rowan has received a grant from the Living Artists Collective (2024), the Kolaj Institute Residency(2024), an anonymous funded month long residency in Italy (2023), and multiple solo exhibitions throughout the city.
