“RUNNER ON BROWN”, 1979 SIGNED ORIGINAL LIMITED EDITION COLOR SERIGRAPH BY AMERICAN ARTIST PETER MAX (b.1937)
This original limited “Hors de Commerce” edition color serigraph (silkscreen print) is by the German born American artist and printmaker Peter Max, who became “America’s Painter Laureate” and known for his contributions to the restoration of the Statue of Liberty.
The serigraph is hand signed in pencil by the artist in margin below the image lower right corner: MAX. It is numbered in pencil in the margin below the image lower left: HC/ 9 (a Hors de Commerce edition, aside from the numbered edition of 175).
With original prints, "HC" stands for Hors de Commerce, a French term meaning "out of trade" or "not for sale." These are special prints, similar to “AP” which stands for Artist's Proof and “EA” which stands for Epreuve d’Artiste, the French term for Artist’s Proof. HC prints are not part of the regular numbered edition and are given to the artist or publisher for promotional purposes. HC prints are produced in very small numbered editions, not intended for sale, making them rarer and generally more valuable than numbered edition prints.
The serigraph image size, printed in five colors on heavy stock cream color paper, measures 16 7/8 x 19 1/4 inches, the sheet with trimmed margins measures 21 x 21 1/4 inches. Date created: 1979. The serigraph comes unframed.
