- Jeannine Cook
Jeannine Cook often combines realistic and abstract elements in her luminous watercolor paintings. The flowers in these works on paper are among those cultivated for decades in Hapeville’s many gardens – cannas and blue salvia, as well as calla, ginger, and yellow day lilies. Architectural details from Hapeville’s familiar buildings, such as arches from the High School, diamond patterns from the Post Office entrance windows, and the roof and eave supports of the Depot, create imaginary backdrops. Stylized depictions of Hapeville’s air, land and rail communications, as well as a vignette of the Depot as it appeared circa 1900, are rendered in the border friezes. Blue airplane trails and red patterns from the airport runways, train tracks, and the shape of the city of Hapeville reference the influence of the transportation industry on the local community.
