While I sometimes have been known to ‘tweak’ the colours you might expect to find in the Scottish landscape, there isn’t really the same necessity to take liberties when painting Floral arrangements.

Unless the bouquet you are painting has been bought in the local garage, with a collection of radioactive neon blossoms, the problem is not usually in beefing up the colour, but more in trying to subdue some of the high intensity contrasts you can find between the high keys of the blooms and the bass notes of the foliage.

Getting a range of cool greens and purples to set off the reds, pinks and yellows is never straightforward.

So when I saw this arrangement with its big, spiky, copper-coloured leaves, I couldn’t wait to get started.

I really enjoyed giving prominence to the ‘support act’, the leaves and was very happy with the finished painting.

I hope you like it too.
