The combination of a vase of flowers and fruit sitting on a small occasional table is my visual equivalent of a jazz improvisation on a simple theme and I return to it again and again.
San Pedro Fruit & flowers
We have a small timeshare apartment near St Pedro D’Alcantara, near Marbella, which has inspired many of my paintings of interiors. The paintings be easily identified by the intense shafts of sunlight breaking through the closed blue shutters.
This imagery goes back to the first time we were in the apartment. We were being shown round by the estate agent while a Spanish family were resting after lunch and the apartment was almost in darkness with only these stripes of sun providing any illumination.
This of course is eminently sensible, as it keeps the apartment cooler for sleeping, but for someone who had travelled 4000 miles to find the sun it made a lasting impression.
This painting is more Dizzy Gillespie than Miles Davis...maybe my version of ‘Summertime..and the living is easy’ 😎
