This large canvas embodies my experience of living within — not merely observing — the Mearns landscape. It is both a celebration and a personal interpretation of the place that has shaped my daily rhythm and creative vision. The painting unfolds in layers of red, orange, and violet, evoking the warmth and vitality of the fields, while flashes of turquoise and green suggest the cool clarity of distant horizons.
The scattered houses and clustered trees form a kind of visual counterpoint — recurring notes within a broader symphony of colour and texture. Each patch, line, and motif arises from the improvisational act of painting, a balance between structure and freedom, between what is seen and what is felt.
Mearns Vista was conceived as a visual interpretation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s “Sunset Song” — a novel that captures the soul of this land in words. My painting seeks the same emotional truth through colour: a landscape of memory, change, and belonging, where the light itself becomes a kind of music.
