Frances A Listou
Evergreen, CO
My pleasure and purpose are ensured when I see someone, especially a child or a person visually impaired, playfully tracing the lines of my sculptures.
MessageAs with most artists, Frances has always been! Of course, in childhood, there was coloring, drawing, scrapbooking, and mud pies. In her twenties, she studied drawing and painting at the Maryland Institute of Art. From these studies came her love of pen and ink. Frances’ thirties brought clay into her artwork when she moved to Colorado in 1978. Frances did not start carving until her late forties when her husband, Erik, gifted her a hammer, chisels, and a stone. After that, she became a stoner. She does not smoke…Frances carves rocks (redefining the term “stoner”)! This led Frances, then in her fifties, to attend many MARBLE/marble Symposiums in Marble CO. Thus, her craving for carving Yule Marble. Now in her late seventies, Frances is still a stoner!
Frances’ artwork has been honored by collectors, juried-in shows, and awards. Since Frances lives in the foothills of Colorado, carving stone is a warm-weather process. She enjoys carving out of doors among the very tall firs, elk, deer, squirrels, and bunnies in a forest. Winter brings out the clay and acrylics in her toasty rustic cabin studio.
Statement
My pleasure and purpose are ensured when I see someone, especially a child or a person visually impaired, smiling and playfully tracing the lines of my stone sculptures. I am struck by the power of the tool that allows me to change the Creator’s creation into my creation. It is exuberant! Art must be enjoyed by both the creator and the receiver.
