MessageMichael Bourque - Artist Statement
In my award-winning career, I have pursued parallel interests in design, painting and photography. Today I am discovering new connections between all three creative media.
My education includes American University, Pratt Institute and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. I am widely traveled while living in Boston and working nationally and internationally. A painter at heart, I have enjoyed a distinguished career in commercial interior design. I also enjoy photography and my “Art of the Fan” series is part of the Museum of Fine Arts Library collection.
My paintings are geometry based. I enjoy creating interlocking quadrilateral shapes that may span a single canvas or five separate panels of varying sizes and depths. My years of working with architects has given me a well-trained eye. I most often remove perspective from my paintings but love texture and relief. Similarly, I love color and I use it prolifically, layering color upon color to achieve rich effects.
One the international juried shows that I enjoy the most is “Color” an annual exhibition at 3 Square Art in Fort Colins, Colorado. The submissions are extremely high quality and I have won 1st Place Best of Show in three of the seven years of the show’s existence.
