The budgerigar is also known as the common parakeet or shell parakeet. First recorded in 1805, budgies are prized as pets around the world because of their small size, low cost, and ability to mimic human speech. They are said to be the third most popular pet in the world, after dogs and cats. They are found wild throughout the drier parts of Australia.
Males are better at singing and mimicry, while females rarely learn to mimic more than a dozen words. Males can easily acquire vocabularies ranging from a few dozen to a hundred words.
