Yayoi Kusama by Fernanda Lavera Image: Anyone can be Yayoi Kusama.

This is a work that is born from a reflection, in a world where we are told what to do and how to do it. Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama finds in her repetitive and psychedelic polka dot pattern a way to manifest and reveal herself in contrast to the classic Japanese style, which turned it’s back on her in her time.

This counter culture, with a mixture of feminism and surrealism, invites us to think about what drives us in life to achieve our dreams.

Inspired by all this, I ask my mother to make me a Yayoi rag doll, which she made using materials that were available to her. Without knowing it, she was also creating concept art.

On the canvas I painted the Yayoi doll that my mother made. Black backgrounds collide with sprays of fuchsia, which play at being her hair. Exposed brushstrokes speak of my art.
