Today, Alebrijes are like dreams painted in vibrant colors, an undeniable part of Mexico's cultural and artistic imagination (Vargas, 2021). These magical and somewhat surreal beings are like creatures from another world, part zoomorphic, part mutant, all with a touch of fantasy. But what's most astonishing is that they not only live in the imagination but come to life as beautiful and vibrant figures.
As treasures of traditional Mexican art, Alebrijes have the gift of warding off evil spirits, especially those that might seem a bit "monstrous." According to Zapotec mythology, each person is born with a special friend, a little animal called a "nahual" or "alebrije," which guides and cares for them throughout life (Ochoa, 2020).
What makes these beings even more special is their display of bright colors, each with its own meaning. Green connects us with nature and empathy, pink is the symbol of love, orange releases our negative emotions, and yellow is the expression of our feelings, joy, and luxuries. Blue immerses us in tranquility, while brown connects us with the earth and animals (Muñoz, 2021).
As George Bernard Shaw said, "imagination is the beginning of creation." So, by imagining these magical beings, we pursue our dreams and, in the end, create something beautiful.

Hoy en día, los Alebrijes son como sueños pintados en colores vivos, una parte indiscutible del imaginario cultural y artístico de México (Vargas, 2021). Estos seres mágicos y un tanto surrealistas son como animales de otro mundo, mitad zoomorfos, mitad mutantes, todos con un toque de fantasía. Pero lo más sorprendente es que no solo viven en la imaginación, sino que se vuelven reales en forma de figuras hermosas y llenas de vida.
Como tesoros del arte tradicional mexicano, los Alebrijes tienen el don de alejar a los espíritus malignos, especialmente aquellos que pueden parecer un poco "monstruosos". Según la mitología zapoteca, cada persona nace con un amigo especial, un animalito llamado "nahual" o "alebrije", que guía y cuida a lo largo de toda la vida (Ochoa, 2020).
Lo que hace que estos seres sean aún más especiales es su despliegue de colores brillantes, cada uno con su propio significado. El verde nos conecta con la naturaleza y la empatía, el rosa es el símbolo del amor, el naranja libera nuestras emociones negativas, y el amarillo es la expresión de nuestros sentimientos, la alegría y los lujos. El azul nos sumerge en la tranquilidad, mientras que el café nos conecta con la tierra y los animales (Muñoz, 2021).
Como dijo George Bernard Shaw, "la imaginación es el principio de la creación". Así que, al imaginar estos seres mágicos, perseguimos nuestros sueños y, al final, creamos algo hermoso.
