Artist: Rachael Burke (American, b. 1954)
Rachael Burke is a contemporary artist who calls herself an ‘improvisational painter’, as she makes most of her decisions in real-time with brush in hand. Burke’s paintings often lean towards abstraction of traditional subjects, with visible brushstrokes and painterly mark-making, allowing viewers to feel movement and vibration in the subjects.
Burke earned her BFA from Western Kentucky University and MFA from Miami University of Ohio, and then began a career as a Professor of Art at Edinboro University in 1990. Her work has been shown in solo, group, and invitational shows in many galleries, museums, and universities including the Butler Institute of American Art, Carnegie Museum of Art, the Chautauqua Art Institute, Evansville Museum of Arts and Science, among others. Burke has received numerous awards and honors for her work as an artist.
