Created from All About African Violets by Montague Free, published 1951. Inscription: “For Polly’s Orphans With love, Ames 12/28/89”. When thinking of orphans, my mind goes back farther into the past than 1989. A romanticized version of children living in the streets of a large city, banding together to protect each other and also using their numbers to pick pocket those that might take pity on them. This group of a raccoon, rabbit, opossum and fox are brothers and sisters through name and not birth. Desperately wanting to escaped the gray dirty city into a world of magic, color and prosperity, these four use their imagination to escape into a world they create where happiness, love and home are plentiful.
