In sight of Monadnock -
Rudyard Kipling had a beautiful homestead in the mountains above Brattleboro (Named Naulakha), overlooking a spectacular view of Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire. Kipling wrote most of his most notable works while in the area, and keeping detailed journals of his time there before moving to other parts of the US. One such entry was titled "In Sight of Monadnock" which gives a rather detailed first-hand account of what the area was like in his time, towards the decline and downfall of farming in Vermont (referring to the multitude of abandoned farms littering the landscape in his view to the mountain).
