Equivalent Lands -
Referring to a Land deal the Massachusetts Bay Colony made with the Connecticut Colony after an error was made in mapping the regions. The area which would later become Brattleboro, VT was one of these areas that came from the deal. Following the trend of colonists - the land belonged to the Abenaki and Sokoki tribes, and taken from them without their involvement or consent in the decision. Following Dummer's war in the early 1700's, which resulted in significant damage to their tribe, most native people were driven from their rightful lands to northerly regions of Quebec. Most of what is now Vermont was called "Ndakinna" by the Abenaki which means "our land".
