Statement
Emily Pleasance is a neo-folk artist working in mixed media. At the heart of her practice is the Canadian landscape. As Canadians, when we ask ourselves,
“who are we”
we must ask ourselves
“where is here”.
This sensibility drives Emily’s work to play with ideas of land, nature, placemaking, and spirituality. Our connection to the natural world influences how we treat ourselves, each other, and the planet. She interchangeably uses wood, textiles, resin, photography, and locally foraged plants and materials.
By using bright colour palettes and infusing humor into her work, her art remains playful even as it critically engages with issues of environmentalism, identity, and existentialism. In 2016, she completed her BFA in Photography and in 2018 her MA in Communication and Culture.
