Flower Fiction
A series of colored pencil drawings on Bristol Vellum paper, depicting flowers selected from commercial or farmers market bouquets. These drawings are a "fiction" in that I select from what is in front of me, drawing what interests me, what connects with my past and from art history, and what flowers speak to me in their shape and color. I do not plan or sketch ahead of time but create the drawing spontaneously from these choices.
Cutting Gardens
This series of colored pencil drawings were inspired by flowers I grew in a "pandemic garden." I had rarely drawn flowers, and became entranced with their colors, shapes, and energy. In the Northern California light it was too bright outside to study them, but in the studio their vivacity was exciting and undeniable. The freshness of garden flowers, from friends or my own garden, continues to inspire me in a different way than flowers I have selected for their shape and form.
California Nocturnes
A series of pastel and charcoal paintings and drawings that depict the California landscape at night
