Elizabeth (Beth) Funk
Anchorage, AK
Retired physician who now has time to paint and that's exactly what she is doing.
MessageI answer to Elizabeth or Beth. Born in Bloomington, Illinois in 1951 I grew up in central Illinois and northern Indiana. I decided to become a doctor at the age of 12. I achieved that goal and went through several iterations during my medical career. I've lived many places in the country, and visited a number of beautiful places in the world. But it wasn't until moving to Alaska in 1995 that I rediscovered color and light through local classes in alcohol inks, and then acrylics and most recently oils. Since retirement in 2019, I have been driven to paint. It's not a hobby, it's closer to an obsession. I have had the privilege of studying with several master artists both in person and through many on-line opportunities. The beauty of Alaska, its wildlife and its people, always amaze and inspire me. It is an impossible goal, but I will continue to try and capture the essence of this land through art.
Statement
As a fledgling artist, I owe special thanks to Francine Dufour Jones for introducing me to the beauty of alcohol inks and to Diann Haist for providing an introduction to classical art training. I am also thankful to Kenn Backhaus through the Tucson Online Academy for his mentorship. And most recently, to David Pettibone, of Homer Alaska, for his instruction through distance teaching. I am also grateful to my new Plein air friends who have been so giving of their experience and knowledge. Alaska is blessed with some amazing artists.
