There is something almost peaceful about the familiar sound of the kookaburra's laugh that pulls me out from the tornado of thoughts so often swirling around and around in my head. Something in that joyful call that brings me back to the present, grounding me in the blessings in this moment, reminding me that I need only focus on one day at a time - the rest is in the hands of the One who made the world.
This graceful bird, so full of joy, is to me a reminder of the gift of the beautiful friendships my Heavenly Father has placed in my life - friendships that I believe He has provided to carry me through the stormy confusion of grief and loss. Sitting on the deck with my dear friend, gazing into the bushland surrounding her peaceful home, we are almost always granted the cheerful company of one of these happy little creatures. I so treasure these moments, just enjoying the reassuring presence of my friend beside me, and thanking God for the invaluable gift of the friendships He has given me to weather the storm. And, coming out the other side, to bring back laughter and joy, joining in with these cheerful little birds in the familiar sound of their call.
