I met this bird on Alcatraz island. Actually, I first heard it before I spotted it hulking along a beam next to the boats. The bird was hunched over and with every step taken it would make a long “harrumph” kind of sound. I nicknamed him the “Peter Lorre bird” because he reminded me of one of those sneaky dark characters from 40s movies. I wanted to paint every detail of this birds amazing feet and eyes! Research convinced me that it was a black crowned night heron. Further reading about the species lead me to a picture of a baby black crowned night heron pictured below!
