Using a very graphic and colourful 36-page brochure describing the program of events around the theatre and music scene for 2022 in Tours, central France, I cut and tore up a selection of the pages and reassembled them into a bizarre collage - one with no theme - but probably the brightest collage I have made recently since developing my ‘cut and paste’ work which has been with a more monochromatic palette such as black, grey and white, or black and sand, with occasional red or blue highlights thrown into the mix. What this piece highlights is that I am trying to branch away from my long-term preference for ‘geometry’ featuring strongly in the planning and painting of my artwork during the past half decade… not geometry implying balance, but geometry being visually obvious with an abundance of straight lines and repetitive angles. Tearing paper by hand and without any drawn guidelines or measurements is the opposite of that and I’m enjoying the exercise.
