DERRY CITY
Eamon McAteer Irish visual artist lives and works in Derry City Northern Ireland
MessageEamon McAteer was born in Derry City Northern Ireland. He graduated at The Slade School of Fine Art, London, with honours, in 1978. After 1980 he returned to teach and paint in his native Derry. He has been commissioned to make work for a number of prominent institutions including AIB, INTO and Thornhill College. He won the Derek Hill special award at the Glebe Gallery Open Submission Exhibition in March 2005. In 2008 he was shortlisted with five international artists for The Foyle Public Art Project, an open international competition, at that time the largest public art project in Ireland. During 2008-2012 he completed, as Directing Artist for Thornhill College, “Stepping Out” a large scale sculpture, and a twenty five square metre unique hand built mosaic called “Light Dance”
Eamon is best known for his landscape paintings which are partially revealed and hidden by the burst of colour and texture that envelops them; his work creates a magical effect and yet, they curiously have a realistic feel to them. He uses his selective visual memory to realise the work: deriving from disparate visual sources that may tentatively connect to Irish psyche subjects.
