Midnight Sunflowers:
Remembering Mom,
Camas Country Mill,
Junction City, Oregon

When I went out last night to find a place to photograph, I drove to Camas Country Bakery, which has an old schoolhouse and a huge sunflower field. The last time I brought Mom here in her wheelchair, it was after the bakery had closed, and only the owner was doing some gardening. I parked her where we could see the sunflowers. She fell into one of her raptures over them while I took pictures. The owner came over to talk to us and become Mom’s instant devoted love slave for life. Before we left, he got out a machete and cut a huge armful of sunflowers, wrapped the stickery stems in newspaper and laid them in her lap. I wheeled her away looking like a queen, wreathed in sunflowers and smiles. This night image is like a flickering memory of that special day.
