This little flightless birds lived solely on a one-square-mile outcrop in the Cook Straight between New Zealand’s North and South Islands for tens of centuries. In 1894 a lighthouse was erected on the tiny island, along with a bungalow for the Keeper – and his cat. Within 30 days, the cat both discovered a new species and sent the wee bird to extinction. Framed in a new composite frame in the French Nouveau style, antiqued silver-gold.
