This piece is part of (and was the inspiration for) the Excellent Birds: Extinct Series of oil paintings begun in 2022. It shows a peculiar variety of duck standing on one foot upon a rock near pond. A frog pokes its head curiously out of the water, giving a wary peek. Never considered a true game bird – its taste was described as atrocious – it was the victim nonetheless of target practice by British big game hunters in search of Bengal tigers. The swamps and dense jungle where this lovely creature once secluded its self are now some of the most densely populated urban centers of India. The last confirmed Pink Headed Duck was seen in 1935, yet reports of sightings continue to present and are considered myth by most biologists. (Rhodonessa caryophyllacea). Framed in a MCM reeded narrow frame, antiqued silver-gold.
