Dot Galfond
Artist’s Statement
As an artist, I always find writing an ‘artist’s statement’ daunting. As much as I love to talk, I have a difficult time expressing how to put into words ‘how and what’ I put into my art glass...I think that’s why I do what I do – because it enables me to express myself without words. I know that I absolutely need to create in glass. It just calls to me like no other medium ever. It’s such an amazing vehicle to use to create!
In its most common form glass can be a kitchen window, car windshield or the glass you had juice from this morning. In its elite form, it can be seen a as crystal chandelier, a cut glass champagne flute or an antique Ming vase. It comes in magnificent opaque colors that reflect light, but won’t let it inside or out. Then there are fabulous transparent colors that absorb light and let it pass right through. It can be very fragile or quite hard, common or elite, opaque or transparent. In many ways, the properties of glass remind me of people; another of the great joys in my life.
When you look at my work, you are looking at hundreds of hours of experimentation, failures and frustration. You are also looking at PURE JOY! The works you see are a part of my heart and a piece of my soul. I hope that is expressed better in my art than in my words!
Artist's Bio
Dot Galfond is a contemporary fused glass artist who resides in Palm City, Florida. Since childhood she has had her hands in some sort of art project; from silversmithing to stage design and construction in high school to computer graphic design and photography. Her love of glass began in 1992 with a stained glass class which eventually led her to her true artistic passion - fused glass. She loves the technological challenge and the complexity of the medium. Heating glass to its molten form; the look of fluid, moving glass. This flowing movement is evident in her body of work.
Primarily self-taught, she has refined her skills and studied with some of the country’s foremost glass artists. Her work has been shown in several group exhibitions, and is represented by galleries on the east and west coasts of Florida and in many private residences.
Dot spends most days in her studio doing what she loves. She constantly seeks to expand her artistic and technical perspectives. When she’s not in the studio, she enjoys traveling with her husband, Mark.
