Bio
Toronto based artist, Donna Zekas maintains a full time studio practice which includes sculpture and painting as well as teaching and mentoring.
Her studies with various professional artist in North America and Abroad has influenced her continued experimentation with new techniques. The multi-layering of different media has ultimately led to creating a diverse body of work and a fundamental artistic process regardless of the medium at hand. Whether it is painting or sculpting her approach is the same: the process of creating evolves into an idea. Through the exploration of visual elements, non-traditional tools and mediums her ideas shift and change weaving together many strands of techniques and thought.
Statement
I am drawn to aged, worn surfaces where imperfections reveal impermanence, memory, and change. My process—whether in sculpture or painting—is intuitive, spontaneous, and rooted in continual layering, adding and removing materials to build up and break down form. In this transitional time, my work becomes a visual response to what is, what was, and what might have been.
