The Wentworth Hotel Limited Edition of 60
'The Wentworth Hotel' is a drypoint etching created after the completion of the large reduction woodcut 'Wentworth by the Sea' in 1992. That same year, Don revisited the Wentworth Hotel and drew directly on the copper plate, producing the drypoint etching, which was never editioned. In 2021, Don approached Robert Townsend of R.E. Townsend Studios to edition the plate, revealing the 30-year-old drawing for the first time.
Don's iconic large reduction woodcut 'Wentworth by the Sea' captures both the grand hotel and the architectural achievements found in New England at the end of the nineteenth century. Please search for 'Wentworth by the Sea' in this catalog to view the reduction woodcut.
The Wentworth by the Sea Hotel is among the last grand resorts along the New England coast. When Don drew the structure, the hotel had been abandoned and was scheduled to be razed. The massive, vacant wooden building, with its striking Second Empire architecture, lends itself well to the aesthetic and reductive woodcut process.
