Memory of Vincent's Cove, A Limited Edition of 17
A Memory of Vincent Cove is a rare reduction woodcut print. Only seventeen were made, and we have one remaining for sale in the Portsmouth gallery.
A Memory of Vincent Cove depicts a place that no longer exists. Vincent Cove was one of the two coves in Gloucester Harbor, the other being Harbor Cove.
Vincent's Cove was lined with wharves and featured three shipbuilding yards, ironworks, a rope walk, and an electric company. It was a significant shipbuilding site in the mid-19th century. By the 1940s, it had been filled in and now lies buried beneath Roger Street. Early photographs preserve memories of times past. I find it haunting and mysterious that such a crucial and vibrant era in Gloucester's history has little evidence of its existence.
This print was created using the reduction woodcut method on BFK paper. The tonal colors employed are few and mixed to enhance the paper's surface qualities and color. Compared to my other reduction woodcuts, this one adopts a more monochromatic approach, and the finished result resembles the completed woodblock from which the print was made.
