Harbor Place, Portsmouth Limited Edition of 14
The reduction woodcut "Harbor Place, Portsmouth" is part of a larger design created as two separate reduction woodcuts. The composition was drawn directly onto the plywood block using India ink from Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
From left to right, the original design presents a panoramic view that begins with a peek-a-boo view of the St. John's Church steeple. The Harbor Place Wharf has a fishing trawler and sailing vessels tied up, and the view extends to the New Hampshire state pier where salt freighters are docked. In the foreground, a Moran Tug is underway. In the distance, the Piscataqua River Bridge connects New Hampshire and Maine.
While in the studio, Don decided to cut the woodblock in two and first completed a small edition of the smaller of the two reduction woodcuts, Harbor Place, Portsmouth. A year later, he completed the reduction woodcut, Salt Freighters on the Piscataqua.
