The subject is the city of Gloucester, Massachusett's nineteenth-century boat building yards, and wharves perched on what was then the edge of the inner harbor, known as Vincent's Cove. The colors used for this woodcut are shades of gold, sienna, and yellows, the colors of memory. The atmospheric sky demonstrates the painterly effects Don creates with his reduction woodcut technique. The colors change from a dark grey at the top of the image to blues, then light greens to pale yellows that sink beyond the city.
The reduction woodcut "Seafaring City" is a precursor to the larger reduction woodcut "Sharp Shooters at Twilight."
