German-born artist Dego creates powerful Excavations paintings that explore the intersection of memory, color, structure, and transformation.
MessageDetlef Gotzens, known professionally as Dego, is a German-born Canadian artist whose career spans more than five decades across painting, sculpture, and architectural glass. Trained in Cologne, Germany, he earned the title of Master Glassmaker after extensive studies in glass technology, design, and traditional craftsmanship, establishing a foundation of technical excellence that continues to inform his artistic practice today.
Having worked in Europe and North America, Gotzens developed a unique visual language that bridges abstraction and representation, combining the discipline of a master craftsman with the freedom of contemporary expression. His work explores themes of memory, transformation, structure, and the dynamic relationship between creation and destruction. Through a process of layering, excavation, erasure, and reconstruction, his paintings reveal traces of history, emotion, and human experience embedded within the surface.
Over the past fifteen years, Gotzens has increasingly focused on painting, creating his acclaimed Excavations series. These large-scale works are distinguished by their powerful color relationships, architectural compositions, and richly textured surfaces. Each painting evolves through an extended dialogue between intuition and intention, resulting in images that invite viewers to discover new connections and meanings over time.
Collectors are drawn to Gotzens’ ability to balance complexity with clarity, spontaneity with structure, and emotional depth with formal sophistication. His work reflects a lifelong commitment to artistic exploration and an unwavering belief that abstraction and representation are not opposing forces, but complementary aspects of the same visual language.
Today, working between Canada and Florida, Detlef Gotzens continues to expand the boundaries of his practice while building a body of work that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. His paintings can be found in private and corporate collections internationally.
Statement
Detlef “Dego” Gotzens
As an artist, I explore transformation through painting and sculpture, merging organic forms with industrial structure. Using materials such as metal, wood, and glass, I examine contrasts—strength and fragility, order and chaos, permanence and change. My work invites reflection on nature, time, resilience, and the balance between creation and destruction.
