Growing up in Finland where birches are abundant, I have always loved the textures and color variations on the branches and barks, and in the summer the lovely movements of the green leaves. I had some soft beige variegated cotton the gave the impression of changes in the trunks and branches. I cut out som thin strips of an exciting black, brown and white patterned fabric, which I appliquéd onto the branches. I used a decorative machine embroidery stitch to suggest the leaves and made some additional quilting lines to extend the energy and movement of the branches. The edging is leftover pieced fabric from another wall hanging.
