At age nine, Denise Lindgren was dismissed from art class in her small town for painting her first abstract--unwelcome there in the 1960s. After pursuing other paths, she returned to an art practice in the 1990s, centered on experimentation and exploration. Her assemblages, blending memory, material, and meaning, have earned recognition and placement in private collections nationwide. In 2025, Lindgren’s solo show, Meaning Through Memory, transformed ephemera into works exploring memory as both nostalgia and a bridge across generations.

Statement

My focus is on using the relationships between the elements as symbolic of the ways, as individuals and a collective humanity, we think of ourselves in relationship to God and to others. The concepts of autonomy, dependence, equality, exclusion, and compassion are simultaneously at play in my work. In my collages and assemblages I use a geometric constructivism style and a limited palette and often incorporate original, once-used materials carrying both personal and collective histories. At the heart of my practice is a blend of aesthetics, process, content, and material—anchored by spirituality and a belief in memory’s ability to connect past, present, and future.
