Palm Skins
On my daily walks, especially after windy days, I began noticing the shed skins of palm trees scattered along my path. Their texture and shape reminded me of fabric—weathered, organic, and full of potential. I collected and preserved these natural remnants, imagining how my ancestors might have done the same in times of scarcity.
To bring them into the Take Cover series, I stabilized the palm skins and bordered each square with vibrant African print fabric. I then wove strips to connect the pieces, forming a quilt-like structure. This piece honors the resourcefulness of those who came before me—those who, lacking traditional materials, would have made do with whatever was available to create warmth and protection.
