Quilt Codes
We’ve all heard the stories of the quilt codes—patterns said to have guided enslaved people to freedom along the Underground Railroad. Whether those stories are fact or folklore, we hold on to them because they speak to the resilience and ingenuity of our ancestors.
In Quilt Codes, I honor that legacy while reimagining it for the present. I used 4x4 canvases with acrylic pour designs that resemble topographical maps—abstract routes for modern-day travelers seeking safety, direction, or liberation. The only colors present are red, black, and green—the bold and iconic palette of Pan-African culture.
This piece asks: What does freedom look like today? And what signs are we following to get there?
