About Debra Smith

Debra Smith was born in Kansas City in 1971 and raised in Hannibal, Missouri.

My artwork is built from stitched compositions made with vintage silk kimono fabrics, contemporary silks, and other textiles I have collected throughout my life and travels. I cut, arrange, and reconfigure these materials into abstract constructions that often feel like maps, pathways, or quiet systems built from fragments. The work carries echoes of Constructivism, Minimalism, and Process Art, but its true foundation comes from the histories held inside the cloth.

My relationship to Japanese textiles began when I was a young artist working at Asiatica https://asiaticakc.com/pages/about-us That experience taught me to recognize the depth of labor, skill, and cultural meaning embedded in vintage silk kimono fabrics. Although I am not culturally connected to Japan, I approach these materials with respect for their lineage and for the unknown makers whose presence remains alive in the cloth. My sensitivity to textile work was shaped long before that by my mother and grandmother, who were both makers. Growing up around their practices taught me to understand fabric as a carrier of memory, intention, and human presence.

I make this work because the studio offers a place where I can slow down and listen. The materials guide the direction of the piece, and the process becomes a way of finding orientation and clarity in a world that often feels unstable.

Pursuing her interest in fashion and textiles, Debra Smith studied at the Italian Academy of Fashion & Design; Lorenzo de Medici in Florence Italy before receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute with a major in Fiber in 1993 and an Associate Degree in Applied Science from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2002.

Her work has been shown internationally over the past two decades, including solo & group exhibitions. The learn more please visit:

“I am not a poet or someone who draws, but I feel that my use of vintage textiles as a medium brings a history, a weight, a poetry to the work before I even begin to cut, sew and piece the work back together. Allowing the work to intuitively flow thru me the end result is similar to a drawing or poetry.”

Breaking all stereotypes associated with textiles, from ideas of craft to that of “women’s work” Smith’s pieced images have a strong language that is much more similar to that of painting.

After living in Brooklyn, NY, for over a decade, Smith returned to her native Midwestern roots in 2004. She now lives in Kansas City, where she continues to create art from vintage textiles.
