Like water, glass plays with light shifting and changing. I tried to capture the feeling of the Ocean. Ocean Spirit is a thick piece of glass, you can see into the shimmering blue depths like looking through a wave. Making it was nerve-wracking. When the finished piece emerged from the kiln it faced my glass saw to be cut into a precise block. Cutting into it with a diamond saw was not for the faint of heart. The work was formed in multiple stages, each stage fraught with the additional danger of cracking the thick glass as it heated to molten temperatures in the kiln. The coral was sculpted separately and melted into the glass by sinking it into layers and stacking them. The imagery was formed with whisper thin layers of powdered glass, until the spirit of the Ocean appeared... there will never be another.
