In this tapestry, a woman dances beneath the moon along a river's edge, her outstretched fingers mirroring the wings of the heron beside her-capturing that fleeting sacred moment when the rhythms of the natural world and the human spirit seem to move as one.
A 50/50 silk, wool blend was acid dyed with Jacquard Dyes and forms the weft. Woven into the composition are small touches of a rare gold thread handmade in Sendai, Japan, by a workshop believed to be over 400 years old. The thread, crafted using a centuries-old technique of wrapping 24Kgold leaf around silk was preserved for years in the artist’s collection and brought forth only for a few tapestries. The workshop that produced the thread was tragically destroyed during the 2011 tsunami. Moon Dance used the last of the thread from the artists collection in small touches throughout the piece.
The result is a tapestry that honors the fleeting luminous moments when nature and spirit move in harmony-woven not just with thread but with memory, reverence and intention.
