Koi Pond combines techniques and layers and was intended to be a large tapestry. I began the piece on a linen warp using a Swedish knotting technique. After tying thousands of knots, I knew I'd be unable to finish using such a time intensive method. Sadly, I cut it Koi Pond off the loom and put it away as a failed piece. Later, looking through my box of tapestry samples and fragments, I realized I could cut the work apart. The Swedish knots don't unravel like traditional tapestry which would fall apart.
The edges of the cuts were hand embroidered and gaps in the design were filled in with additional embroidery. Koi Pond was reimagined as a tapestry collage of layers and techniques. The curved frame echoes the curve of the koi gliding under the water lilies.
