This piece resembles a delicate charcoal drawing, however the imagery was created by layering whisper thin passages of black glass powder. The powder is held in place by a thin layer of ground crystal. Once the drawing is complete and the crystal is sifted over the surface. the drawing is obscured. The work was carried carefully and placed in the kiln. The slightest breath, or bump could have jarred the drawing, erasing it forever. There was no way to tell if the work was intact while it was hidden from view by the crystal. The cream colored glass with the drawing was placed next to a beautiful and rare piece of violet glass whose color was achieved by adding 24K gold to the molten glass at the factory. The cherry branch traveling across the violet plane was laid on top along and sunk into the glass with a careful firing schedule over the course of two days. When the glass cooled, a glass saw was used to cut the edges. A process that risked shattering the finished work. Another trip through the kiln to polish the edges and the work was finished. Delicate and difficult, it was worth trying to capture the beauty and fragility of cherry blossoms as the moon rose.
