Debi Garrett
Contemporary Northern Irish artist creating layered portrait works that explore identity, resilience and the inner landscape.
MessageDebi Garrett is a Northern Ireland–based artist whose work investigates identity, memory and the unseen architecture of the inner life. Blending portraiture with abstracted fields of light, she builds her surfaces in transparent layers - glazes, mark-making and subtle metallics - allowing forms to emerge and recede like recollection. Faces become landscapes: mapped by time, etched with tenderness, defiance and the long work of becoming oneself.
Her collection Echoes of the Soul brings together figurative works that sit at the threshold between the seen and the felt - portraits that ask quiet, difficult questions about what we carry beneath the surface, what we guard, and what refuses to be silenced. Alongside her portrait practice, she paints nature pieces that attend to the way light moves through forests and across water.
Debi's work lives in private collections across the UK, Ireland, Canada and South Africa. She has her first solo exhibition in County Down in summer 2026, and her practice continues to evolve at the intersection of the contemplative and the contemporary.
Statement
I paint people the way I experience them: as constellations of story, energy and light. My work lives in the space between what is visible and what lies beneath the visible. I'm interested in what we carry beneath the surface: the unspoken weight, the scar that made us softer, the part that refuses to go out.
I build my paintings in layers - thin glazes, quiet neutrals, sudden flashes of gold - because that is how a life reveals itself. Edges blur and re-form. Faces arrive slowly, then look back. Each surface is an accumulation rather than a declaration.
Echoes of the Soul is my ongoing conversation with sovereignty and tenderness. These works ask simple, difficult questions: Where do you hide? What do you guard? What refuses to be silenced? I am not trying to tidy anyone up. I want to witness people as they are - weathered, luminous, still becoming.
If a painting of mine helps you recognise yourself - braver than you thought, more vulnerable than you've allowed - then it has done its work.
