About Debbie Shirley

Growing up in the midwest and moving to the north shore of Massachusetts after studying art in college, painter Debbie Shirley spent years in the printing and advertising fields, developing an obsession with typography and mid century modern design. Missing getting her hands dirty once the industry became digital, she returned to the paintbrush, naturally gravitating to neon lettering and commercial signage.

Combining this interest in lettering, signs and contemporary design with a passion for old buildings and nostalgic subject matter, Debbie’s work captures the spirit and eclectic beauty of iconic roadside architecture as well as grittier city landscapes. She finds intriguing stories in these ordinary pieces from our past. Debbie participates in exhibits throughout the United States and has her work in a number of publications in addition to being in many collections worldwide.

Featuring mostly roadside scenes and realistic still lifes, much of Debbie’s work can be seen here or on her website at www.DebbieShirley.com

Statement

In my paintings, I capture moments in time through realistic renderings of nostalgic Americana. My work celebrates the quiet beauty of antique toys, classic objects from bygone eras, and the fading urban landscapes that once formed the background of community life - the mom & pop convenient stores, faded well-worn laundromats and traditional steadfast barbershops that tell the stories of neighborhoods in transition.

Originally from Ohio, but calling Massachusetts home for over 35 years, my artistic perspective blends Midwestern sensibilities with New England influences along with my graphic design background. Through careful attention to detail and light, I invite viewers to reconnect with the overlooked treasures of our shared past and find meaning in these everyday artifacts and spaces that might otherwise be forgotten.
