MessageDayna's fiery red hair sets the tone for how she makes her art and lives her life. She is an energetic, intuitive, abstract painter working in oil and cold wax over plaster, a collagist working with scavenged book scraps and faded fragments of ephemera, and an avid collector/junker of discarded objects, which she uses in her assemblage art.
Dayna has been an artist for 16 years and shows her art in three Pacific Northwest galleries. Her work can be seen in several published books, including Art for Everyone, Oil and Cold Wax, Art Abandonment, The Mixed-Media Artist, and Cold Wax Medium.

Statement
My art and life has been an evolution of color and represents a rise out of darkness. When I began making art in 2005, five years after entering recovery, I had no idea where it would take me, but 16 years ago while taking a 12-week course on creativity, I discovered my love for art. The first thing I created was a collage - on a bowling pin. A whole new world opened for me and I intuitively knew that I wanted to paint, explore texture, and experiment with putting bold colors together.
I am a collector, energized by hunting for materials to use in my art, especially old worn out objects and ephemera. When I see a beat up vintage tin or discover a rusty piece of metal, I hyperventilate. When I discover a stack of battered old books, my heart skips a beat, knowing that once I have ripped them apart, I will have a pile of faded fragments to use in my Salvage Collages. I'm excited about the opportunity to give new life to these cast off, expendable objects. My mixed media pieces reflect the passage of time, and I am thrilled to repurpose the scraps that are worn and weathered, transforming the aged and tattered pieces into something unexpected and beautiful, celebrating their fragile decay.
As an abstract artist, I work in multiple layers and mediums. When I am working in oil paint mixed with cold wax, I begin my paintings with a thick coating of plaster, which allows me the immediate gratification of an initial layer of texture. I then go in and lay down paint, scrape, and add more layers, making marks and scratching into the textured surface. With my collages, I use a similar process of layering and scraping, revealing and concealing, telling a visual story where no words are needed.
