The Loggerhead Shrike (*Lanius ludovicianus*) is a robin-sized songbird found across North America, easily recognized by its gray back, black mask, hooked bill, and black wings marked with white patches. Despite being a passerine and lacking the strong talons of true raptors, it's a fierce predator that hunts insects, small reptiles, rodents, and even other birds, earning it the nickname "butcher bird" for its habit of impaling prey on thorns, barbed wire, or other sharp points to store food or help tear it apart. It favors open habitats like grasslands, pastures, and scrublands with scattered perches for hunting. Unfortunately, the species has suffered significant population declines in recent decades due to habitat loss and pesticide use, making it a species of conservation concern in many parts of its range.
