Eurasian eagle-owl, watercolor on 140lb paper. The Eurasian Eagle-owl (*Bubo bubo*) is one of the largest and most powerful owls in the world, with a wingspan that can reach up to 188 cm (74 inches) and a weight of up to 4 kg (8.8 lbs). It has a striking appearance, characterized by its dense, tawny-brown and buff plumage mottled with dark streaks, a broad facial disc, and large, vivid orange eyes that give it an intense, almost fierce expression. Its most distinctive features are its prominent ear tufts — long feather clusters on either side of its head that stand upright and give it a formidable, almost regal look. Found across a vast range spanning Europe and Asia, it inhabits diverse environments including rocky cliffs, dense forests, mountain ranges, and semi-open landscapes. It is a supremely capable apex predator, hunting at night and feeding on a wide variety of prey including rabbits, hares, rodents, and even other birds of prey. Its deep, resonant call — a booming "ooh-hu" — echoes across its territory, often carrying for several kilometers on a still night.
